SHR - Current Team & Alumni April 2017
So once again the Jodies, young and old, honored America's finest by marching in the Medal of Honor Parade in Gainesville, Texas today. We had the current team take a knee, knowing that if we went down, some of us might not be able to get up!. Jill recorded this memorable moment. From the left: Bunky, Kennedy, Floyd, Freddie, Mark Stevens (who came in from Seattle), Mike Parker, Boyd, Stan Thompson, Ken Smith, Mark Latham, Orlando , and Axel. We did find out that adding a new movement minutes before we stepped off wasn't the best thing to do. The "Campos" required a couple of exchanges and a twirl, and that movement was scrapped within 100 ft. of the start of the parade. Our second movement, the "Bunky" looked like a one legged goat in heat that was hobbled to a fence post and required a skipping motion while trying to get in step with the other marchers. And, instead of an arm swing, the arm was extended in a stationary position with the rifle being dragged along the ground with the other hand.. Only one of the marchers was able to master those moves. Another fun twist was a joint movement with the current team. It felt pretty good to be marching with about 20 people. And, with the exception of our new movements, I must say, that the crowd appreciated our effort, and MS and UTA can be proud of our efforts. Most of the old men and their wives enjoyed another round of Chef Parker's burgers at the After Party at Sandra's Barn. The bonds that hold this group together is a strong as ever, even though there is a 56 year span between the oldest and youngest marchers.

The University of Texas at Arlington was well represented at the Medal of Honor Parade in Gainesville Texas on April 9. UTA military veterans who were members of the Sam Houston Rifles drill team while attending UTA, fielded a drill team and bagpiper for the third year in a row and the unit honorably represented UTA with their performance during the parade.
Now one of the crowd favorites, these old soldiers collectively have over 160 years of service to our country, and span 54 years of wearing the uniform. Participants included Major General Lester Simpson current commander of the Texas National Guard’s 36th Infantry Division. The drill team included 5 colonels, 5 pilots, two Army Rangers, one Marine Corps Officer, and one Green Beret. Seven members of this years’ team have been inducted into the UTA Military Hall of Honor.
Gainesville hosts this annual four- day event to honor recipients of America's highest military award, the Medal of Honor. The Medal of Honor is awarded for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty and is presented by the President in the name of the Congress. Medal of Honor recipients are honored by the community and participate
in many activities during the program's four days. Eighteen Medal of Honor Recipients attended this year's event which attracted a crowd of over 50,000.1st row - J Bevill, P McEwan, O Reyes, K Smith, M Latham, A Martinez
